Trim Levels
The new Mitsubishi Outlander and Highlander are available in several trims, allowing you to tailor your chosen vehicle to the level of luxury you’d like. The Outlander’s four trims are the ES, SE, Black Edition, and SEL. If you opt for the Highlander, you can choose from the LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, and Platinum. One of the biggest differences between the trim lineups is the price. The Outlander’s starting MSRP is over $10,000 below the Highlander’s. That gives the Mitsubishi a clear advantage if you’re shopping for a seven-seater SUV on a modest budget.
The base Outlander trim includes cloth upholstery, a six-speaker stereo, and an 8-inch touch screen. To get your hands on a more upscale cabin, you could opt for the range-topping SEL trim, which has genuine leather upholstery and heated seats. The lowest Highlander trim offers cloth-covered seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an 8-inch touch screen. Moving up the trim ladder can offer features such as a 12.3-inch touchscreen, genuine leather seats, and a head-up display. Therefore, there’s sure to be something that matches your preferences in both lineups.
Performance
The higher price for the Highlander gets you a more powerful engine under the hood. However, the unit in the Outlander is more than adequate for most driving situations. The Highlander runs on a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine capable of putting out 265 horsepower, whereas in the Outlander, you’ll find a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that churns out 181 horsepower.
One advantage of the lower horsepower in the Outlander is that it has better fuel economy than the Highlander. The Mitsubishi can reach up to 31 mpg on the highway and 24 mpg on city roads, compared to 29 mpg and 22 mpg, respectively, in the Toyota. The Outlander can tow up to 2,000 pounds at the rear, enough for a pop-up camper or small trailer, whereas the towing limit in the Highlander is 5,000 pounds.
Design
Inside the cabin, both SUVs boast three rows of seats. You can fit eight people in the Highlander if you have a second-row bench seat. Some configurations feature captain’s chairs in the second row for more comfort, reducing passenger capacity to seven. Behind the third row of seats, you’ll find around 16 cubic feet of storage space, which is enough for a decent load of groceries. Folding down the third row opens up about 48 cubic feet of space, while you can store up to 84 cubic feet of cargo with both rear rows folded down.
The Outlander’s three rows provide seating for seven people. The first two rows are ideal for adults; you can comfortably accommodate kids in the third row. It has slightly less cargo room behind the third row than the Highlander with 11.7 cubic feet. However, when you fold down the two rear rows, you get almost as much maximum cargo space, with over 79 cubic feet on offer. If you need the second row to carry passengers, there’s about 33 cubic feet available when the third row is folded down.
Technology
There are significant similarities between the infotainment options in both vehicles. The Highlander and Outlander have an 8-inch touch screen and six-speaker stereo in their base setups. You’ll find wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and Bluetooth in the Mitsubishi, while the Toyota has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and Bluetooth. Other standard features available in the Highlander include a Wi-Fi hotspot and Amazon Alexa. The Outlander voice recognition system allows you to complete basic tasks.
Moving up in trim levels, the Outlander offers a 9-inch screen and a 10-speaker premium stereo. For the second row, you can also add wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless device charging, and USB ports. In the Highlander, you can upgrade to a 12.3-inch touchscreen and an 11-speaker sound system. Wireless device charging is another optional add-on. Overall, you can get many of the same features in the Outlander that the Highlander offers, although the higher price tag gives the Highlander a slightly larger optional touch screen and a more powerful stereo.
These two competitors are also equipped with an extensive selection of safety tech. Standard features in the Outlander and Highlander include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and pedestrian detection. If you drive on the highway, you’ll benefit from lane-keep assistance and lane departure warnings in both vehicles, which help you stay on the right track. Adaptive cruise control is an optional add-on in the Outlander and comes standard in the Highlander. It adjusts your speed on the highway to make sure you maintain a safe distance from other motorists.
Some of the exciting upgrades on offer include a surround-view parking camera, which gives you an aerial view of your vehicle, and rain-sensing windshield wipers to ensure your vision stays clear, whatever the weather. You can also add traffic sign recognition to see any driving instructions on your digital gauge cluster.
